Is my Quarto file uploaded anywhere?

No. Your .qmd file is read and rewritten entirely in your browser, on your own device. It is never sent to a server, so nothing leaves your machine.

What is Quarto and a .qmd file?

Quarto is a modern, multi-language scientific and technical publishing system. A .qmd document is plain-text Markdown extended with a YAML front-matter header and executable code cells, so one source can render to HTML, PDF or a website.

Is a .qmd already Markdown?

Largely, yes. A Quarto document is Markdown at heart, so this converter mostly normalizes it rather than rewriting it. The prose, headings, lists and tables are already valid Markdown and come straight through.

What actually changes during conversion?

Only one thing: each executable code-cell label is reduced to a plain language tag. A fence written as ```{python} or ```{r, echo=false} becomes a clean ```python or ```r block, which renders predictably anywhere.

Is the YAML front matter kept?

Yes. The front-matter block between the --- fences is preserved verbatim, including the title, format and any other keys you set. None of those fields are stripped or reordered.

Are callouts and shortcodes preserved?

Yes. Callouts, divs and shortcodes are left exactly as written, as plain text in the output. The converter does not expand or remove them, so your directives stay intact for later rendering.

Which code languages are supported?

All of them. Python, R, Julia and Observable cells are all handled the same way: their executable label is flattened, leaving a normal language-tagged code block. The code inside is never touched.

Is the output good for LLMs and RAG?

Yes. The result is clean, language-tagged Markdown with front matter and headings intact, which chunks and embeds cleanly. You can also enable cleanup, a table of contents and RAG chunk export.
